SWEATING THE DETAILS IS KEY TO SOLVING AN ICE CAVE CHALLENGE
CLIENT: Detroit Zoo
SITUATION: The Detroit Zoo is renowned for its imaginative exhibits that incorporate naturalistic habitats, and the award-winning "Arctic Ring of Life" attraction is no exception. The stat-of-the-art, $14.9 million, interactive facility encompasses over four acres of outdoor and indoor exhibits populated by polar bears, seals and other arctic wildlife. Highlights include a huge saltwater tank where polar bears and seals dive and swim; a 70-foot underwater tunnel that gives observers a unique view of the aquatic environment, and an ice cave that visitors must traverse to reach other exhibits. It's the ice cave that has posed an especially interesting engineering question: how do you make an ice cave that has real ice on the walls and yet maintains a steady temperature of 70-75 degrees within the space--without the spraying of water and with all equipment concealed?
SOLUTION: Delta Temp Inc. reviewed the requirements, and after multiple testing of calculations, arrived at an engineered approach that solved all of the challenges: use moisture released from the bodies of hundreds of visitors to make an ice-covered walls. Delta Temp achieved the desired effect with a cleverly
concealed system that includes:
An industrial refrigeration system with 10 zones
An Ambient Wetbulb
A carefully designed defrost schedule
Flow controls and filtration
RESULTS: The specially designed HVAC system achieved two seemingly opposite goals: create and maintain ice-covered walls while also achieving comfort HVAC conditions within the space. Visitors can experience the exhibit comfortably, without having to endure 0-degree temperatures. And since the system is totally concealed, the Ice Cave maintains the illusion created by the overall Arctic Circle of Life attraction.
CONCLUSION: Sometimes imagination is as important as experience in large-scale HVAC&R applications. Delta Temp has been providing innovative design and engineering solutions for nearly 40 years, continually evolving as technologies and customer requirements change.
